Evaluation task 1- In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In both these shots although one is a mid shot and one is a long shot they both reveal the characters expression which is shock and the look that something bad is about to happen. Whats different is that in our final thriller (bottom pic) you cant see what the mise en scene elements really are except a board which looks like some sort of work as the main focus is on her face however in no good deed you can see her whole expression and her physicality too (long shot) and the background which is a kitchen and i feel this shot represents a stereotypical women not expecting the intruder and the audience predict that they will be defeated by the intruder however this stereotype is subverted and these shots show how the stereotype will be subverted and makes the audience think and remember.

In Both shots the writing is almost identical, the white contrasts against the black  as the white is very bright against such a dark colour immediately catching the eye of the audience and intriguing them in. Although the title ‘vengeance’ for my final thriller isn't quite as bold as ‘no good deed’ and has a slightly edgier font i think this suggests something interesting about the film.  Both titles are large in scale and dead in the centre and this shows something strong, which represents the themes from both films which are female power and subverting a female stereotype.

Both these mid shots show the main female character using a prop to hit the intruder. I think these shots are extremely similar as they are both mid shots and they are both shot so that the intruder is lower then the camera  on the floor and the woman is higher making her appear stronger. The Mise en Scene elements can also be compared, for example in the background in both shots there is a lamp that gives the audience a clear idea that it is set in a comfortable home. Whats different between the two is the lighting in ours the lighting is dark but very bright in some places however in ‘No Good Deed’ the lighting is much brighter showing much clearer detail of both of the characters positioning and facial expressions and also expressing that it could be night time as the lights are so bright and that is not normal for daytime.

Comparing these two shots although they appear entirely different the mise en scene elements are the same in ‘No good Deed’ (the top picture) you can see the female pushing a chest of drawers to suggest she is using this prop to protect herself and block the door way so the intruder cant come in and this relates to my final thriller (the bottom picture) she is putting a large memory stick away in to a chest of drawers and in the same way she is doing this to protect herself like she knows the intruder is coming and she is acting upon it to make things better instead of appearing weak.

These two shots although different in there angle and shot type both show the intruder in a strong stance looking up as if what they are trying to find is hinting to upstairs. Both shots show the stairs merging in to the shot at the same angle in ‘No good Deed’ making him look bigger then he actually is by using a low angle and even though in our final thriller there is a high angle used because he is standing right in the middle it makes him look strong and able. The miss en scene elements suggest an intruder in a house because of the carpet and stairs and again the stereotype of the man downstairs and the women trapped upstairs is clear in both shots.

Here i can compare these two shots as both intruders stand with some door way visible, although the shot is different one is a close up and one is a mid shot the audience still gets an idea that someone who shouldn't be there is there and entering to increase the tension and intrigue the audience. The lighting is very different in both shots and even though our thriller the background is light i think the fact you can not see the intruders face adds to the tension and works well compared to the night time atmosphere in the film i chosen to compare ‘No Good Deed’ however with this night time effect you can see the intruders face but i think both these similar shots still hold tension.

Evaluation task 2 - How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our media product represents particular social groups regarding the four technical areas Mise en scene, camera, editing and sound.
For our product, Mise en scene elements  were very important on how the main female actress cressida was represented. In our thriller cressida wears a black trouser suit, white blouse and white high heels. This gives her a smart and professional look that shows she is a working woman and represents that she is of the high class because her clothing looks expensive and if she was in the working class she would be wearing clothes that did not suggest a work ethic for example tracksuit bottoms. The props that are used in our opening sequence also support the fact that her work is of a high status as she is typing on a laptop the audience sees detailed cork boards that are filled with important looking photographs as well as folders that read ‘confidential’ and other stationary. Cressida has blond hair and wears high heels and feel this completely represents her as a stereotypical woman but when the male (played by Mike Niland) breaks in to the house and they fight the stereo type is subverted as instead of expecting the male to win the fight against the weaker woman stereotyped with blond hair and high heels the female wins the fight shocking the audience completely. The subverted stereotype is more unexpected as the females facial expressions and character positioning change so dramatically during the opening sequence. At the beginning when she hears the male break in to her house her face is scared and her body is hunched hiding in every corner but when the stereotype is subverted she is strong and her face and body symbolise this however it is the opposite for the male as he has changed completely in to the weaker one.

For camera angles, shots and movement at the very beginning of the sequence  when cressida is at her desk working there are lots of close ups of her eyes to show that she is thinking of something and to guide the audience to what she is looking at on her computer. The shots do not show if she is weak or strong but just hold the tension that something is about to happen until the door is heard opening and then the camera does a shot to make her look weaker from behind her shoulder like someone is watching her and she is fully exposed as she runs to hide from him from example upstairs on the corridor the camera is at a high angle making her look smaller and more vulnerable. However when the stereo is subverted and she hits Mike with the sugar glass bottle he is instantly weaker and the camera immediately cuts to a low angle making her look huge and powerful.

When editing our opening sequence the parts where the female actress was hiding from the male actor were very quick for example taking off her high heels this is a huge change to show the stereo subverted, putting away her laptop, files and hiding the cork boards.  When seeing these cuts you expect the male to walk in and get what ever he wants. When mike enters the house the shots are edited with little cuts as the audience expect things to soon build up and him to take over what she is doing. However again the stereo type is subverted and as soon as the fight takes place the action builds up and the cuts are even quicker whilst cressida grabs the gun pushes mike on to the floor picks up the glass and hits him. This shows that she is in full control and also shows the amount she is doing to defeat him whilst he just remains slow and incapable of winning against her.

For sound we used no dialogue to hold tension as the audience doesn't know whats about to happen when the male actor is entering the house there are no fast cuts or movements it is slow therefore we have a slow soundtrack to symbolise this. However subverting the stereotype because Cressida then takes control when she is fighting against the male the soundtrack builds up to resemble how much more she is doing to defeat him then what he is doing to her and you would expect the complete opposite and this is what we want to shock the audience and entice them.

Evaluation task 4 - Who would be your audience for your media product?

This is a Facebook page answering questions and showing who would be the types of audience for my media product. It posts things about the plot, the target audience, and what kind of characteristics people who would be interested would have e.g. jobs. I used Facebook which is a very popular social media to distribute this information as it is a quick and easy way to display information that can be accessed easily and shared between viewers.
