LOCATION

To decide where to do our thriller  was difficult because we knew we had to compromise on something that would look very like a house as we needed to film downstairs, on the stairs and upstairs. We discussed building a set but after speaking to the construction crew we knew that the levels needed would be to difficult to make it look like a realistic house. We then thought about using real life houses and the easiest option were our boarding houses at school. Each person was allocated a house to look at. Perry looked at peaslake, I looked at Cornhill Manor and Lucas and Indie looked at Beatrice Webb. We thought looking at these houses would be useful because they do look like real houses and they have the individual location spaces we need for example stairs, downstairs and an upstairs. After doing this we soon came to realise that none of the boarding houses looked like a normal house they were to big and they weren't decorated how a lived in house would be and all three houses looked to much like a school. While we were discussing other possible locations Freddie Gass a member of our class told us that he lived near by and that we could use his house if it was the right look we were trying to achieve for our thriller.
Here are some photos he sent us to see if we thought it was right as our final location:

  Mike Niland.

Originally we were going to use our first choice for the female role which was Franchie Webb however she was unavailable so our next best choice was Cressida as we felt she looked old enough for the part and she is a competent actress. Mike Niland was our first choice because his strong physique was perfect for the role of a man of high status and as well as Cressida he has had experience in partaking in short films. Both actors have confirmed in person that they will be available for Wednesday the 28th January 2015 from 9-5.
Here is our confirmation email that Cressida was available for this date and time

COSTUME

Costume:
Due to the fact that we changed our idea entirely, only keeping a few of the elements which we initially discussed, we have had to cast new members due to the fact that we have created new characters. As a group, we collectively decided which costumes we thought would best suit the characters regarding the given circumstances. Having created new characters, we have had to ensure that we found costumes to fit their characters so that the audience can immediately recognise their class, status, power and could relate to their characters.

 Woman:

The character of the 'woman' will be played by an A2 student. We chose her due to her mature look and her good acting skills. We felt that if we chose the right costume for her, she could effectively play the role of an older woman in early/mid twenties. We need the actress to look fit, healthy and  intelligent. Her profession,  is evidently one of power and authority and we will represent this through her smart clothes, hair and make up.

Blouse:

We chose a classic yet simple blouse to give the character a smart and mature look. We also chose the colour white which will contrast nicely with the dark coloured clothing of the burglar. The actress playing the woman already has a white blouse therefore we will not need to purchase one.

Black Work Trousers:

Again, we have chosen plain black work trousers to add to the smartness of her look. We don't want her costume to take away from the main focus of the thriller, therefore, we have chosen a plain and simple look. We will need to purchase work trousers because nobody within the production team has a pair.
Women's Work Shoes:

For the actresses shoes we have chosen low high heels so that she looks smart and professional but also she looks feminine. We have specifically chosen shoes with a low heel so that it is practical and she can move around easily. We are borrowing these shoes from the costume department so we don't have to buy any.
Man – Burglar
Blue Timberland's:

We decided to dress our male character in Timberland shoes because we wanted  sophisticated yet practical. We chose the colour blue because we wanted a colour which would blend into his costume to make his appearance more subtle. Fortunately our male actor already has a pair of navy blue timberlands which means that we will not be required to buy a pair.

Black combat trousers:
We have decided that we would like the male character to be dressed in black combat trousers to make him look more practical and active. Again, we think that it would be a good idea to dress him in black because due to the nature of his actions, he will need to look discreet and subtle. Our actor has black trousers so we won't need to buy any.

Black long sleeved jumper/top:

We chose for this simple, black, long sleeved top to be worn by our male character because we felt as though it looked appropriate and is still smart and practical like the rest of his uniform. The characters profession requires him to be  active and we felt that this top would be suitable for action. We will buy this from a local shop on the high street such as Topshop or H&M.

CHANGE IN IDEA EXPLAINED POST

Our original idea was to film a party scene where a boy takes a new physcotic drug and the camera zooms in to his eyes deep in to his eyes to discover demonds taking over his brain.
We pitched this idea to the members of staff and they felt that it would be difficult to make our idea look the way we wanted it too. We then came across many complications such as

  • not finding enough actors for the party scene that would be available all day to make it look realistic like there was a party actually happening.
  • The party scene would have to take place somewhere realistic such as a house and getting all the actors there and back would be difficult.
  • Finding the make up and costume to make the demonds extremely real and planning where and what they would be doing and for how long
  • The difficult panning shots through the eye and swooping through the scene of the party would take longer then what we had (a day to film)
We then decided on another idea with the same sort of theme. Set in a mental hospital in the late 1990s a pan through a long corridor in to a mental patients room where we see them in a cold and clinical environment, the camera swoops around zooming up the patients body and again going in to his mind to see the demonds taking over his brain and controlling him. With the same sort of idea this faced many complications such as:
  • Finding vintage props and costume to fit the era
  • building a set to look realistic enough
  • finding a corridor to match the set or the difficulty of building one
  • finding a male actor who had the skills to act but also look realistic and not to young
  • the demonds: what they were doing and how we would film them
  • building a bed
We then decided on the idea that we have now to keep the same amount of gripping tension we were aiming for in the first two but an idea that was a lot more simple: A woman in her early 30s working for MI5 in a high powered job is working in her house alone when a man breaks in and is trying to rob secret information off her, we subverted the stereotype to turn the man in to the victim as she is well prepared hiding all valuable informationn such as her laptop, files etc so she eventually wins the fight leaving the man vulnerable. We wanted to keep our audience gripped but also shock them with something unexpected. With this idea came little complication as we needed few actors, we didn't need to build a set and we could find particular props and costumes easily.
