Story Boarding why use one, your process

Story boarding is crucial  part of making a music video. It acts as a 2D guideline for what the music video will eventually look like when developed. It acts as a visual aid so you can see what each shot looks like in full detail and can give you ideas on how to develop it further so it can look its best when filming. It also saves time as it may take a while to draw each shot and add the details of where it is etc in the long run when doing the anamatic story board/ process you have it as a detailed guide that then speeds the process up.

Here are two examples of shots from our story board. I feel like it gives you a clear idea of what kind of theme we are going with for our video. For example the shot of the girl in the woods you can see the dress and you get the unique look that she is beteen the trees alone. The shot of her feet gives you the natural, earth look to our video she is barefoot and at one with nature.

Legal letter to the record label

Here is a screenshot of the letter we sent to the record label to ask permission to use there song 'The Big Unknown' by Elder Island. It is a requirement to do this otherwise it would be a form of copyright and we wouldn't be able to use the song.

Timeline

Here is a photo of our timeline - The timings and scene changes and what our artist will be doing within these particular scenes.

Pasion pictures guest speaker -Ollie Allgrove

Ollie Allgrove came to talk to our class to give us advice on the process of making a music video and how different roles in the industry work together to produce something. Ollie Allgrove is an executive producer for an independent company called 'Passion Pictures'. Passion pictures makes film,TV and adverts. Ollie talked to us about the collaboration between the director and the artist and how ideas are discussed between different people in charge of different things so they can fit the brief and come up with the best idea under there budget producing the best result they can that will hopefully make as much money as possible.
Ollie talked a lot about the way the media industry try and please there target audience by selling the story for there artist. As music videos are different to films you have to keep the audience engaged at every moment, so using contrast as a device is a popular way of keeping the audience interested.
The shoot should be when everything has been thought about and solved and there are no unanswered questions otherwise problems will occur on the day to waste time and money.
The edit- the lip sync needs to be planned before and make sure it matches section sin the song and mot importantly things can not just be fixed in post production, it is just another layer to make the material you already have work together better.

Audience profiling

QUESTIONS

  • The JICNARS scale - what it is and where does your audience fit into it and why?
  • What are VALS (psychographic profiling)? Which group does your target audience all into and why?
  • Why would your target audience like your new artist?
  • How are you going to appeal to your target audience?

The JICNARS Scale

The JICNARS scale is a target marketing guide to profile there audience demographically in to different categories based on class, occupation and status. The JICNARS scale is a way of working out what kind of person you are and what kind of thing you will be interested in used by the media.

Here is the JICNARS scale:
A - higher management
B - middle management
C1 - supervisory
C2 - skilled manual
D - semi/unskilled manual
E - subsistence income/unemployed

Looking at the JICNARS scale i think my target audience would be between the ages of 16-30 because we want young audience appreciation but also for young adults to appreciate it as we feel with our artist there are many aspects that appeal to everyone. Using the JICNARS scale our audience would fall in to 'E', 'D', and 'C2', as for the younger audience they would not be earning there won money but taking it off there parents through allowance or possibly have a weekend job in a shop. For the older audience (C2) at the age of 30 they would have a more high skilled job so they would be earning there own money and not living off there parents.

Above is a diagram of the groups that VALS contain

VALS - Psychographic Profiling

VALS are the values, attitudes and lifestyles of the person who is consuming the media. It is what they do in there daily lives, what they believe and how they act and react. The media thinks about the background of the consumers so they know how to target them so they can sell there product as the people wh are consuming this type of media can relate to how they are selling there product e.g. a particular style of clothing. For my target audience both young and slightly older there VALS would be belivievers, thinkers ,strivers, strugglers and experiencers. Our artist music promotes problems and how she feels lost to sometimes so that can attract the people who have experienced and achieved a lot but somehow always had a struggle along the way, believers and thinkers take in a lot of information but somehow understand and relate to the arts personally.

Our target audience will like our new artist because there is a lot to her she doesn't just have one set of VALS, the audience can relate in different ways and the songs she does have a deeper meaning/message but also pleasing to watch i.e. the visuals and effects, she is extremely different and edgy making the audience almost obsess over her and think of ways they can be like her to the point where they keep wanting to know the latest trends as if she is the only person who understands them.

We will appeal to the audience in a way that is easiest to connect with ages 16-30 using modern technology e.g. , using social media on fcebook, twitter ,setting up an instagram page, linking to clothes webistes and posting her on bill boards. We want to get the word around as much as possible so she is everywhere and you can't ignore her.
